My anecdotal explanation is that psychologists and psychiatrists are more concerned with self-preservation and their own ego, despite the latter actually being medical doctors. After civilization came along and we transitioned from hunter-gatherers to agricultural-based beings, what was different? What is the purpose of awareness?
