Like Laura, I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age seventeen. Over the next two decades, I cycled through seven psychiatric hospitalizations. I had learned helplessness through being fed this narrative that my brain was “disordered,” and that narrative did not empower me in any way, shape, or form to take charge of my wellbeing.

The National Centre for PTSD attributes this to the fact that men are more likely to experience trauma, but women are more likely to develop PTSD, possibly due to higher emotional sensitivity and reactivity, which increases susceptibility to mood disorders. It also focuses on fostering trust through transparency and peer support.
