The 16% increase in ADHD diagnoses over the last decade is due, in large part, to revised diagnostic criteria published in the DSM-5 , which changed the maximum age of onset from 7 to 12 and added the first-ever qualifier symptoms for ADHD in adulthood. 15 ADHD shortens an individuals life expectancy by 7.5 years , on average.
