Robert Spitzer, who headed up the construction of DSM-III, acknowledged he knew of no such evidence apart from the few disorders I cited above. They regarded phobias as unconscious representations of hidden childhood traumas, and they were convinced by this theory that eliminating the phobia would precipitate a psychosis.
