Professor Cathy Creswell , from Oxford’s Department of Experimental Psychology and lead for the NIHR ARC OxTV’s mental health across the life course theme, recently visited Chile to establish the project. In February 2023, it was recommended for use in the NHS by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

R esearch has found South Africa consistently ranks in the bottom three performing countries in terms of global mental health. The 2004 national South Africa Stress and Health study , the first large-scale research project of its kind in the country, found the lifetime prevalence of any DSM mental health diagnosis to be 30.3%.

Valeria Frighi Dr Frighi was a Senior Clinical Researcher in the Department of Psychiatry and an Honorary Consultant in Endocrinology and Diabetes at Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust. Her work focused on improving health outcomes for people with intellectual disabilities and those experiencing severe mental illness.

The theme of the conference was public mental health. Elites of the global mental health movement such as Vikram Patel were also present and so were eminent Indian psychiatrists, especially from public sector teaching hospitals. This is known as the Movement for Global Mental Health.
